9. Remote Access > Virtual Desktop Infrastructure

Virtual Desktop Infrastructure

Remote Desktop Services (RDS), the evolution of Terminal Services, was introduced in Server 2008 R2 and is the heart of VDI (Virtual Desktop Infrastructure). Whereas DirectAccess and RRAS provide remote client connectivity on the server side, VDI is about the desktop and user experience on the client side.

Microsoft has made significant improvements with VDI because it really had no choice. With the consumerization of IT, employees, consultants, and other end users of a network are using personal devices to perform work-related tasks. As these devices are increasingly touch-enabled, Windows VDI technologies have been updated to support touch devices and other gadgets that are being introduced into Windows networks. VDI and Remote Desktop are no longer solely about the PC or laptop, but about the tablet and smartphone, too.
