Chapter 1. Windows Server Update Service... > Patch Management for the Enterprise

Patch Management for the Enterprise

Picture this. You are the network administrator for weneedpatchmanagement.com. It is a beautiful Tuesday morning. The sun is shining. There is a spring in your step as you go to work. Latté in hand, you take your seat at your desk, flip your calendar, and break into a cold sweat. Reality hits you like a freight train. This is not just any Tuesday; this is the second Tuesday of the month, what we in the business call “Terrible Tuesday.” It is the day that Microsoft releases its monthly batch of operating system, application, and device driver security hotfixes and updates.

The problem is that weneedpatchmanagement.com does not have a systematic way to deploy these updates consistently across its user base. Once these updates are released, some users religiously apply all of them, some apply some of them, and some ignore all of them. The random pattern of updating takes place, and results in different levels of security preparedness and stability in the software running on users’ desktops and laptops, and company servers. Multiply the randomness for as many months as this has happened, and this network administrator has a real mess on his or her hands.
