Chapter 15. Managing Software Updates > Third-Party Solutions

15.4. Third-Party Solutions

SBS Software Updates does a good job of managing the various patches for Microsoft products on your SBS network. It has a single, integrated, and consistent method for patch management that will meet the basic needs of the majority of SBS environments. And it’s certainly easier to get set up and working correctly than using the regular Windows Server Update Services download from Microsoft.com. But having said all that, there are limitations.

The WSUS on which SBS Software Updates depends will only manage updates of Microsoft products, and it doesn’t give you the fine-grained control that some SBS networks might need. If your needs go beyond the basics of SBS Software Updates, you need to go either to a product such as Microsoft’s Windows Intune or to a third-party product. Windows Intune is a good product and well-suited to larger SBS networks, but it does move your update management and deployment from your own network to a managed, fee-based, cloud subscription service. Windows Intune includes software licensing for updating your client computers to Windows 7 Enterprise.
