For several centuries, work consisted of going to a place of business, doing a job, and then going home. In the last century or so, workers at home might be reachable by phone, but most things they needed to do required them to return to the workplace. Then computers and pagers and cell phones came along, and workers were expected to be reachable virtually around the clock, no matter where they were. But that electronic leash didn’t come with a corresponding ability to access the resources to resolve the problem or deal with the issue. All too often, responding to that electronic leash meant going in to work—just as it had before such technological wonders.
