The initial setup of Remote Web Access (RWA) for your SBS 2011 Essentials server should be done immediately after the initial installation of SBS 2011 Essentials. This initial setup will set your Internet domain name, configure DNS, and configure your router to forward the required ports to your SBS 2011 Essentials server. Additional configuration and customizations beyond the initial setup can be done at any time and are covered in Chapter 14.
Real World: Manual Router Configuration
SBS 2011 Essentials is designed to work with routers that support UPnP. When UPnP is enabled, all the configuration of your router is managed and controlled by the SBS 2011 Essentials server. This simplifies configuration significantly and allows everything to work as SBS 2011 Essentials expects it to.
However, if your router doesn’t support UPnP, you can configure it manually by using whatever interface it provides. (We’d give you specific steps, but every brand of router is a bit different.) If you are going to manually configure your router, we recommend that you configure the SBS 2011 Essentials server to have either a fixed IP address or at least a Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) reservation on the router. Then, at the router, configure virtual servers to forward ports 80 and 443 (HTTP and HTTPS protocols) to the IP address of the SBS 2011 Essentials server. You should configure the router before you run the Set Up Remote Web Access Wizard.
