Most ISPs and organizations that handle large numbers of dial-up users use RADIUS to handle user authentication and to distribute policies. By configuring all boundary hardware to talk to RADIUS servers, it is possible to distribute a consistent set of remote access policies to every point-of-presence.
RADIUS originated with Livingston Systems. A description of the RADIUS protocol is contained in RFC 2138, "Remote Authentication Dial In User Service (RADIUS)," and RFC 2139, "RADIUS Accounting." Microsoft has published extensions to the standard RADIUS attributes in RFC 2548, "Microsoft Vendor-Specific RADIUS Attributes."
