Chapter 5. The Cisco Cloud Strategy > A Brief History of IT Service Delivery

A Brief History of IT Service Delivery

With hindsight, it is easy to see that cloud computing is simply the next big step in the evolution of the Internet. We, as consumers of information services, have moved from mainframes to desktops to mobile devices, such as tablets. On the web, we have moved from the delivery of content and applications to today, where it is now possible to even rent virtualized computing, network, and storage resources. This is actually quite remarkable and a real tribute to the original architects of the Internet to be able to have grown to the size it is today and thus be able to support these new Web 2.0–based models. The purpose of the original ARPANET was to provide remote access to other computers, so in many ways, we have come full circle.

We are reminded of an alleged quote (or more likely a misquote) by Thomas J. Watson of IBM fame in 1943: “I think there is a world market for maybe five computers.” This apparent misquote might be closer to the truth than anyone realized until now!
