Chapter 12: Protecting Virtualized Environments with System Center Data Protection Manager

There’s a motto that says, “If you’re going to put all of your eggs in one basket, you better have a good basket.” Certainly this applies to virtualization: if you’re going to put multiple servers on a single piece of hardware, then you need a reliable way to protect that host.

In Chapter 7, “Backing Up and Recovering VMs,” we reviewed common issues and manual methods to back up Hyper-V–based virtual machines. Although those options and techniques work well with Hyper-V, they are not optimal, because they require manual intervention and don’t easily address complex scenarios or multiple servers. This chapter will explore how you can use System Center Data Protection Manager to protect virtualization hosts, guests, and the configuration between them.
