Updating from the Beta Version to the Final Version of Hyper-V

As we discussed earlier, the final version of Windows Server 2008 included the beta version of Hyper-V. Before you update to the final version of Hyper-V, you must perform several steps to protect against data loss. You should follow these instructions if you want to upgrade to the final version without losing your existing virtual machines.

Performing the Pre-update Configuration

Unfortunately, there is no central site for configuration data. Therefore, you must follow the following four steps for basic configuration before you apply the update:

1. Record the static IP configuration: If the virtual machine is set up to use a static IP address, write it down. As part of the upgrade process, the virtual machine will need to be re-created using the old virtual hard disk (VHD). Because the new virtual machine will have a new Media Access Control (MAC) address for the Ethernet controller, the old static IP address won’t be recognized.
