The animal on the cover of Mac OS X in a Nutshell is a German shepherd. The model for this picture was Vinny, a search and rescue dog for the King County (Washington) Sheriff's department. The German shepherd was hand-drawn from photographs of Vinny by his aunt, Lorrie LeJeune, an editor at O'Reilly.
