Using a Screensaver

Once upon a time, screensavers did exactly what their name implies: They prevented onscreen images from being "burned in" to the phosphors of an old CRT monitor. Those days are long gone, however, just like your green screen, floppy disks that actually flopped, and the DOS Prompt. Today's monitors are virtually immune to burn-in. You could leave a Windows PC running for ages without worrying about screen damage, and power settings that turn off the monitor also do much of the work of screensavers.

Surprisingly, though, Windows screensavers are still among the most popular downloads on the Web. Primarily, the attraction is the entertainment value, but screensavers also have a limited security function.
