All editions of Windows Vista can connect to remote LANs through the Internet using virtual private networking (VPN). This very secure technology makes it safe to use Microsoft networking over the public, insecure Internet. Vista supports NAT connections using the Point to Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP) and Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol (L2TP) support. Vista Service Pack 1 adds support for VPNs based on the Secure Socket Tunneling Protocol (SSTP), which simplifies making connections when the VPN client or server’s Internet connection uses Network Address Translation (NAT).
