2. Assess Your Password Needs

Chapter 2. Assess Your Password Needs

Much as I'd like to offer a one-size-fits-all approach to using passwords, that isn't realistic. I could provide a simple strategy that everyone could follow easily, but that wouldn't be very safe, or I could provide a highly safe strategy that would be so annoying to use that few people would be willing to take it seriously. The fact is that we're all at different points on a continuum of password needs. Choosing an arbitrary compromise for people in the middle of that continuum might be just as bad as advocating an approach geared toward one of the extremes.

Although I do have strong opinions about passwords and do make numerous recommendations in this book, I want to begin by putting those opinions and recommendations in context. Only you can decide which choices are best for you. To help you do that, I'd like to say a few words about ascertaining how much password-related risk you may have and how that should guide your decisions.
