Happiness and psychological well-being 23 However, we can only really thrive when we are able to fulfil all our basic psychological needs. The psychologist most well known for listing these needs is Abraham Maslow. Maslow's hierarchy of needs (see below) is still a relevant model, but the model can be extended and reformed; there is more to life than just fullfiling our own needs. People who are really happy are very busy giving back. Actually, there is evidence that Maslow added a sixth need, that of self- transcendence, which includes this requirement for human flourishing, the need to be altruistic, philanthropic and act on empathetic feelings ­ the need in people to look outside and beyond themselves. 13 Psychological well-being
