Secular Bull and Bear Markets
Historically, since 1871 there have been six long-term (secular) bull and bear markets. As you can see in the chart shown in Figure 1.1, which is adjusted for inflation, the percentage gains in the bull markets range between 266% and 666%, whereas the bear markets have lost between 54% and 81%. Therefore, it is very important to try to protect your principal from the devastation caused by these long-term bear markets.
