Lesson 6. Repairing and Retouching Images > Refining a saved selection

Refining a saved selection

As you progress through this book, you are gathering lots of experience with saving selections. In this procedure, you’ll amend a saved selection. You’ll replace the original, saved selection with your improved version.

1.
In the work area, make sure that:

  • The Backdrop selection is still active in the image window. If it is not active, choose Selection > Load Selection, and choose the saved selection by name before clicking OK.

  • The Selection Brush tool ( ) is still selected in the toolbox.

2.
In the tool options bar, select Mask in the Mode drop-down menu.

You now see a semi-transparent, colored overlay in the unselected areas of the image. This represents the image mask, which covers the protected areas.

3.
Examine the image, looking for unmasked areas with details that should be protected, such as places where the Selection Brush strokes lapped over onto the children.

Use the Navigator palette slider or Zoom tool ( ) to adjust your view of the image, if necessary.

4.
Reduce the brush size of the Selection Brush to about 30 px, then use the brush to paint to include any areas you want to mask. Press the Alt key while painting to remove the mask.

In this mode, the Selection Brush tool adds to the mask rather than to the selection.

5.
Switch back and forth between Selection and Mask modes, making corrections until you are satisfied with the selection.

Your goal is to mask areas that contain fine details, even those caught in the crease. Although these are damaged, you can take advantage of the details that have survived.

6.
Choose Select > Save Selection.

In the Save Selection dialog box, choose Backdrop from the Selection drop-down menu. Then, under Operation, select Replace Selection, and click OK. Keep the selection active for the next procedure.
