To perform a variation on the Squares pattern technique, posterize a linear gradient. Starting with a 4-inch by 4-inch square document, choose the Gradient tool (G), and drag a linear two-color gradient from the upper-left corner down to the lower right. For flexibility in coloring, use 80% gray for the foreground and 20% gray for the background.
Create bands from this gradient using a Posterize adjustment layer. Select six to ten levels, and click OK. Merge the layer with its adjustment layer by clicking one and Shift-clicking the other, then press Ctrl+E (Windows) or Command+E (Mac). Optionally, you can convert the layer to a Smart Object and apply the Poster Edges filter under the Artistic filter group.
Duplicate the layer by pressing Ctrl/Command+J, and rotate it 90 degrees clockwise by choosing Edit > Transform > Rotate > Rotate 90 CW. Finally, set the duplicate’s blend mode to Difference.
