The science of photography was slow to develop. Chief among the reasons that photography took some time to catch on was cost. Indeed, it wasn’t until the late 1850s that the importance of photography was affirmed. Even then, photography for fashion was still not viable because subjects needed to be still for so long. Only after better lenses were made that could accommodate faster shutter speeds could subjects move freely during a shoot. By 1911, Edward Stichen had begun taking fashion shots for Art de Decoration, and in 1913 Vogue started publishing fashion photographs by Baron de Meyer. From then on, fashion photography was a booming, artful industry.
