Most desktop printers (and almost all online printers) assume that the image you send to the printer is using the sRGB color space. The operating system provides the printer drivers a way to convert to sRGB automatically; this happens via ColorSync on the Mac, and via ICM under Windows. If the printer driver does not support Colorsync or ICM, you need to make sure your images are in sRGB before sending the image to the printer; otherwise the color results can be unpredictable, typically resulting in an image with drab colors.
