Chapter 15. Special Effects > Cleaning Portraits

Cleaning Portraits

No matter how young and fit you are, there will be times when a little digital makeover is just the thing to turn a decent portrait into an exceptional one. Facial retouching can include everything from removing wrinkles and blemishes to altering shadow details to make facial contours less pronounced. As you’ve probably already guessed, Photoshop provides excellent tools for this type of cleanup. If you’re using a different image editor, it probably has tools similar to the ones described here.

You mostly use two tools for the majority of your facial retouchings. The Rubber Stamp (or Clone) tool is good for completely removing features like dark wrinkles, assuming there’s enough clear facial tone around the wrinkle to get a good clone. For the rest of your touchups, you’ll use the Dodge tool. (See Figure 15.16.)
