Beautiful Backlit Shots

If you want to add some visual interest to your outdoor shots, look for backlight opportunities, especially when shooting people. Backlit images bring a drama and dimension you don’t often see, except from pros. How do they do it? First, position your subject so the sun is directly behind them, with no light falling on their face, so they look like a silhouette. Then, switch your camera’s metering mode to Spot Metering, and aim your focus point on your subject’s face. By doing this, you’re telling the camera, “This is the most important thing in the photo—make sure it’s properly exposed.” Now, when you take the photo, it will make your subject’s face much brighter.
