Chapter 2. Composition and Light > Visualizing Your Masterpiece

Visualizing Your Masterpiece

In this chapter we are going to discuss some key ingredients that will help us create beautiful black-and-white images. I often liken photography to baking: You can have all the best intentions to bake the perfect pie, but if you don’t have the experience or a basic recipe—temperature, proportion of ingredients, and time—then everything is left to chance. In this chapter I am going to try to take luck out of the equation and give you a strong recipe for a great black-and-white photo.

I like to think every chapter has a message. The first chapter was about building an essential kit over time. This chapter is all about photographing with intent. Often the difference between a snapshot and a great shot lies within the choices you make before releasing the shutter. If you roll the dice enough times, you’re apt to get a good shot now and then, but I want to increase your probability of getting great shots every time. Your goal in this chapter is to learn how composition, lighting, textures, and lines all work in harmony in creating an intentional image.
