Chapter 20. Framed > Building a Frame

Building a Frame

Developing awareness and skill with how to use the frame is something every photographer must learn. Otherwise, all of one’s pictures will seem bland and without a sense of space. Including a frame within the picture’s edges is a tried-and-true technique that can help you hone and develop your framing and compositional skills. Rather than relying on the defined edges of a photograph, look for lines, edges, and frames in the world and compose to create your own.

Effectively experimenting with this technique can potentially help you in few different ways. First, it will heighten your awareness of how people fit within a defined space. Then later, whether or not you use the technique, it will improve your overall compositional techniques. Finally, it can lead to creating powerful and well-defined shots.
