Although true, it’s almost becoming clichéd to identify the camera as only a tool in the photographic process. Of course it is only a tool, but it’s an essential one. We’re photographers—we use cameras. We’ve chosen the camera as our means to express story, and if we want to continually grow as visual storytellers, it’s to our advantage to learn not only how to use it but why we use it in certain ways under certain circumstances. Skilled photographers employ this tool much like a master wood craftsman uses a hammer or a lathe.
