Chapter 7. Storytelling Workflow > Where Does Workflow Begin?

Where Does Workflow Begin?

In truth, this entire book is about workflow. We tend to restrict this term only to the computerized component of our work as photographers, but everything we do to tell a story with our images is part of a workflow—our workflow. With all the buzz these days about having a digital workflow, I would hate to see the parts of our craft that lead up to the computer neglected. Whatever benefits there are to having a digital editing workflow, surely they should aid the entire process, not just the endgame.

The storytelling workflow begins with the nondigital component (I know, we’re all pretty much shooting with digital cameras these days, but the nondigital component I’m talking about includes what you do with the camera). The moment you take that idea that has been percolating and start conducting some initial investigation as to how you might be able to make a story out of it is the first step you make in your workflow. You jot it down in your notes, do a little digging around for information, decide there’s something interesting about this story, and sink your teeth into the process. You, my friend, just initiated your storytelling workflow.
