Going into Battle

If you can zero in on getting to a mutually satisfying point with everyone you photograph, you will have already won much of the battle, and I don’t use the word “battle” lightly. Fortunately, a great deal of the experience of a portrait session can be seamless and flowing, and well, fun. But it can also be a significant amount of work. It may consist of a concentrated effort to connect with individuals in a rather brief amount of time, which pays off handsomely in terms of meaningful captures but is, nonetheless, a heck of a lot of effort. Going into battle is an apt analogy, because it is helpful to dress accordingly, arm yourself appropriately (you already know about gearing up at this point!), know who is doing what and when, and of course, be able to anticipate what might happen next.
