What Matters

Just like shooting in the studio or at a client’s home, I still look for elements that matter to the family members and work to incorporate them into the shoot. Sometimes it’s the actual location—a treasured beach house, perhaps—or an element that represents something significant to them that has a shared meaning—like an activity they share. One family I have photographed on numerous occasions has incorporated basketball into its life in a big way. The father was a pro NBA player for 14 years and is currently a basketball analyst for ESPN. Their son plays on a team, and they have two hoops around their house. The family just loves the game, so we were sure to showcase not just the ball, but also the family team spirit in this simple image.
