7.4. AT THE SHOOT

Whether you're traveling across town or across the world, photographs of cultural and geographic details, such as the landscape, public spaces, traditions, and signage, help you tell a compelling story about your adventure. Following are some tips to remember in capturing these images.

• When traveling in other countries, be mindful of the local religious customs and beliefs, and respect those beliefs in your photographic approach.

• Be a visual storyteller. If you are planning on submitting your images to consumer publications and book publishers, they prefer to see a depth of coverage on a particular subject, so they could possibly use all or many of your images in a publication.

• When you arrive at a new place, you should start by taking wide-angle establishing shots of an expansive area such as a cityscape or landscape. Get in closer with medium shots, and then capture some close-up, detail shots (for example, stone textures, grass, and insects) or other interesting things you see along the way. When you place these images together, they tell an intriguing story and give your viewer a sense of place, from your perspective. This is what makes your images unique. An identifiable, personal style helps you build your identity as a visual artist.
