The RAW Format Solution

One of the most significant changes that I’ve made to my shooting method in the past few years is that I have switched to shooting almost exclusively in the RAW format. You’ve probably seen RAW mentioned quite a bit online and in photo magazines and, if you’re not already using it, have wondered what the buzz was all about and if it’s something that you might want to try. Not all cameras offer a RAW format option, but virtually all MILCs and dSLRs do, as do some advanced compact cameras.

There are a number of excellent reasons for shooting in the RAW format and using it can have a very significant impact on the quality of your pictures. It does, however, require an additional editing step: you must use a RAW converter software program that lets you open your RAW images and edit/save them as JPEGs or TIFFs. It’s not a difficult process, and it opens up several nice image-enhancing opportunities, but it takes a few extra minutes of time.
