76 Part II Wedding Photography Techniques and Concepts The Rule of Thirds The Rule of Thirds is perhaps the most commonly known and used concept in the art world. As the name implies, the image is divided into thirds both horizontally and vertically, as shown in Figure 5-1. This division creates four lines and four spots where the lines intersect. Both the lines and the intersections can be thought of as the most powerful location for subjects or other items of interest in the image. For example, as shown in Figure 5-2, you might place the horizon on one of the horizontal lines. Which line you choose can depend on whether the main subject of the image is in the foreground below the horizon or in the sky above the horizon.
