CHAPTER 5: Composing Your Art > Leading the Focal Point - Pg. 82

82 Part II Wedding Photography Techniques and Concepts This sort of perception, combined with the technical skill to capture it, is what separates the average wedding photographers from the truly great ones. There is no magic to it. Anyone who truly cares about shooting weddings can learn to expand her vision and perception. It's not that some lucky people are just born with an artistic eye while others aren't. There is certainly a genetic component to artistic ability, but for the most part, it's a cultivated skill. Leading the Focal Point As a viewer looks at one of your images, the viewer's eyes tend to travel over the image in predictable ways. The usual pattern is for the viewer to first take in a brief general overview and then zoom in on the subject. If the subject is not obvious, the viewer's eyes may wander around searching for it. If the viewer finds nothing, the viewer is likely to feel dissatisfied and move on to something else. If that image was on your website, that "something else" may be another photographer's website.
