Chapter 5 Using the Flash > Using Flash with the Nikon V1 or J1

Using Flash with the Nikon V1 or J1

The Nikon V1 uses the Nikon SB-N5 Speedlight, which, as I write this book is the only compatible dedicated flash unit. It’s easy to work with as it uses no batteries, and is powered by the rechargeable cell in the Nikon V1. So, installation calls for simply sliding the multi accessory port cover off, and slipping the foot of the flash unit into the mount. It locks into place automatically. The components of the SB-N5 are shown in Figure 5.2.

image Flash lens. The flash tube resides behind this translucent focusing lens, which directs the beam to provide coverage for focal lengths of 10mm or greater.

image Swivel head. The flash head rotates a full 180 degrees left or right, so you could point it behind the camera, to the left or right sides, and any position in between. One conceivable use for the reversing feature would be to turn it around (and probably angle it up slightly) to point the flash at a white card reflector (or even a white shirt) to provide a broad, diffused light source.
