Ring Flash Used Creatively

The statement that ring flash units are not suited for shiny, metallic surfaces is generally correct because the flash tube reflects off the object, yet this effect has the potential to be used creatively. A few strips of colored foil attached with tape to the diffuser of the ring flash bathe the object in a shimmering play of colors that cannot be created with conventional lighting. Because the individual foils reduce the light intensity to various degrees, you get more play in the change of light and shadows. The lighting does not appear as flat.
