Safety Considerations

Personal safety is of utmost importance; protect yourself against accidents and illness. If you are searching for your subjects predominantly in the forest and meadows, you should think about protection from ticks, and possibly consult your family doctor. He can tell you if immunization shots are necessary, and offer advice about a travel first aid kit. A medication for insect bites should be included, because even when approaching bees and wasps respectfully, sometimes a misunderstanding occurs and you may be stung.

Red Forest Ant at Work. 1/60 sec at f/8; 150mm macro len; flash with softbox; ISO 400. Because of the dim lighting situation at the forest floor, you cannot avoid using a flash (particularly with active insects).
