Research does not usually lead straight into the making of the work; more often it sinks in slowly, over a period of time, subtly affecting and changing the way you work and what you decide to concentrate on. Sometimes your research may affect your practice more directly; you may discover something that changes your opinion, idea or approach. Archiving everything in a way that you can easily refer back to will help you apply the research you have done to your practice. Your project may start with basic research into a subject, theme or technique, but equally it may start through taking photographs and realizing, on reflection, the potential for further work. You might be inspired by being somewhere or hearing something, or through reading, looking or watching. Essentially, recording how a project or body of work develops allows the photographer to see how different types of research have informed and affected the work, and shows that all aspects of a project are part of a research process.
