This chapter has the challenging task of attempting to cover the TDC to a level of detail great enough for the reader to understand and apply to their embedded project. At the same time, the details cannot be so great as to apply to only a relative few readers. As such, it makes sense to mention related books where a reader can find greater details on particular topics.

The first book to recommend is “Programming with Hyper-Threading Technology” [9] by Andrew Binstock and Richard Gerber. This book was written before the advent of multi-core processors but provides good fundamental information on multi-threading. A related book, “Multi-Core Programming” [10] by Shameem Akhter and Jason Roberts provides coverage of SMP programming on Intel Architecture and greater detail on thread technology like Win32, Pthreads, and OpenMP. Even more specifics on Pthreads are found in “Programming with POSIX® Threads” [11] by David R. Butenhof. The final reference is to “Patterns for Parallel Programming” [12] by Timothy G. Mattson, Beverly A. Sanders, and Berna L. Massingill, which details the mechanics of finding and exploiting concurrency in your application.
