Introduction

Delphi for .NET Developer’s Guide is a book about developing to .NET and specifically doing so using Delphi. This book doesn’t rehash content covered in previous Delphi Developer’s Guide books. With the exception of Chapter 5, “The Delphi Language,” the material is all new. I’ve also taken a slightly different approach with this book than that of my previous works. Here, you will find more examples that illustrate a few or single concepts rather than larger listings that combine concepts. It will be easier for you to examine the technique without having to sift through unrelated code.

Additionally, I have intentionally avoided as much as possible using IDE’s facilities. For instance, in the chapters on ADO.NET, you will see that I set properties programmatically. I did this so that you can see which properties are used and to avoid having to write out instructions on IDE usability that end up cluttering the text of the actual technique. However, because using the IDE is important to development productivity, Chapter 3 “Introduction to Delphi for .NET and the New IDE,” highlights several of the IDE capabilities that help you to be productive when developing. Essentially, my goal was to write a book specifically about .NET that is technique oriented, using Delphi rather than a book about Delphi for .NET.
