2.31. THE COBOL CODING SHEET

Programs are normally written on coding sheets before they are entered into a source physical file using an editor such as CODE/400. The entire program is referred to as the source program or source member. Software developers who create programs without first entering them on coding sheets may find that the debugging process takes more time.

A COBOL coding sheet is shown in Figure 2.14. Each coding sheet has space for 80 columns or positions of information. In addition, these COBOL coding sheets have 20 lines numbered 01–20 respectively in columns 4–6. They also have several more additional unnumbered lines that can be used for insertions in case one or more entries have been accidentally omitted. Every line written on the COBOL coding sheet is entered into a COBOL source member using CODE/400.
