20.6. Summary

In this chapter, we’ve looked at the System Services mechanism, which allows applications to modify the current selection in other applications. We saw how this special case for distributed objects allows you to extend all existing applications by adding simple functionality.

You don’t have to export any of your application’s functionality as a service. Many applications don’t, and a lot that do publish services that don’t make life any easier for the user. If you are thinking of writing a simple application, however, then you may find that it works better as a service, or as an application that exposes a service. This is true of any kind of application that is designed to produce data for embedding or which works as a filter.
