Using Xcode

Xcode is an Integrated Development Environment (IDE). It subsumes project management, project building, code editing, and debugging into one giant tool. IDEs improve productivity by making common operations easier.

Not everyone likes IDEs because they require people to learn a whole new unfamiliar environment. By making common tasks easier, they tend to obfuscate (render incomprehensible) rarer tasks, either by hiding needed settings in some far-flung options page or by hiding what they are doing. People who prefer using their own text editors will be relieved to know they can continue to do so: Xcode recognizes when files are edited externally and will ask you what it should do. When Xcode builds a project, it uses external command-line tools, so you can also use makefiles if you want. You will, however, need to run your applications from Xcode.
