In this chapter:

The previous chapter discussed distributed computing in general. We now want to focus on one area: Distributed Component Object Model (DCOM). Before getting to the nuts and bolts of developing distributed systems based on DCOM, let’s briefly examine COM and the motivation behind this technology. DCOM is nothing more than a wire protocol and a set of services that allow COM components in a distributed environment to intercommunicate. Once we’ve examined COM, we’ll learn about the facilities and services that COM provides to make it a viable distributed objects technology.
