Part IV: Exercises > Creating a Graphical Skin with Photoshop

5.4. Creating a Graphical Skin with Photoshop

If you’re familiar with Photoshop, you know it is a pixel-based editing tool. The artwork you create in Photoshop can be exported as a PNG, JPEG, or GIF to be used in Flex to customize your applications. Photoshop can be one of the more involved of the CS3 applications to create custom user interfaces for Flex, but if it’s an application you’re most comfortable with you shouldn’t be deterred. In this exercise, you will learn how to create skins for Flex using Photoshop.

With Photoshop, you can use layers to create bitmap artwork to compose your Flex application design. You can use this artwork as exported PNGs, JPEGs, or GIFs for various UI elements like skins, cursors, backgrounds, icons, and more. Each skin part must be a separate graphic asset when using bitmaps.
