9. Fonts and Text

One of the easiest things you can do to customize an application is to introduce a custom font and text styling. Fonts, just like colors, can help establish or reinforce a brand, evoke an emotion, or promote legibility. It is important to understand that just because you can use a certain font doesn’t mean that you should. The most important thing when working with text is legibility. Also, be considerate of your audience and what they would feel comfortable reading on the screen. Formatting text can be tedious, but when executed properly, it can make your application look polished and professional. In this chapter, you will learn how to work with fonts and style text in Flex.

When working with Flex, you may find the need to mix and match fonts, but try to find fonts that compliment each other. For example, it is not the best idea to use a script font as the primary font; however, you can use a stylized font as an accent font throughout an application. Don’t go overboard with the number of fonts you use either. The most important thing is to not distract a user from consuming the information he needs or prevent him from achieving a goal.
