5.16. Regular Expression Syntax

Flex patterns are an extended version of the regular expressions used by editors and utilities such as grep. Regular expressions are composed of normal characters, which represent themselves, and metacharacters, which have special meaning in a pattern. All characters other than those listed in the following section are regular characters. Whitespace (spaces and tabs) separate the pattern from the action and so must be quoted to include them in a pattern.
