15.15. Communicate Using a XMLSocket

Problem

You need to create a connection to a server that will receive XML data without requesting it.

Solution

Use the XMLSocket class to open a connection to a server that will allow the server to send information to the client and have that information be received and handled when it arrives.

Discussion

The XMLSocket class implements client sockets that let a Flash Player or AIR application communicate with a server computer identified by an IP address or domain name. To use the XMLSocket class, the server computer must run a daemon that understands the protocol used by that class. For the protocol:

  • XML messages are sent over a full-duplex Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) stream socket connection.
