Setting the Stage

Throughout this chapter, we will follow a common template. I’ll start by introducing the language and/or tool the section is covering. I’ll then talk about some of the benefits of that particular tool, move into information regarding how to get started with it, and finally provide an example of using it to create an application.

Each of the three options presented in this chapter has a number of advantages. As such, the one that is considered to be the “best” will depend on the problem you are trying to solve, the team that is trying to solve it, the development and/or architectural goals of the solution, and personal preference.

The example we will use to show the differences between each option is a simple “To Do” list tracker. It’s far from full-featured, but it provides an adequate playground to show off various aspects of the tools in question. The main page of the application provides two groupings of tasks, which clearly separate those that are yet to be done from those that are completed. Once complete, a task can be dragged from the To Do column and dropped into the Done column. Figure 5-1 shows a screenshot of the app.
