Drawing good storyboards is a demanding task. The drawings must be simple and clear. The artist must have good drawing skills and understand perspective, design, motion, volume, shading, and figure drawing, some of which will be covered in this chapter. Each of these skills is important for the artist to develop simple yet clear drawings.
Drawing a good storyboard takes more than just good drawing skills. The artist must also understand the purpose for the storyboards. Storyboards are a communication medium, and like any other communication media, the storyboard must fill its role. Storyboards communicate through pictures. The pictures need to show those looking at the game design a clear image of what the game will look like. For example, a nice picture of a character in a corridor from an extreme angle might look great, but will the character ever be seen from that angle in the game? If not, then the picture is not fulfilling its role in the design.
