Particle-Specific Material Expressions

The Material Editor contains two material expressions that are designed specifically for use with the particle systems: Vertex Color and SubUV. Although both of these expressions are covered in Chapter 2, “Advanced Material Construction,” this section covers their use in terms of particle systems on a deeper level.

Vertex Color

Controlling the color of your particles is a two-stage process. The first stage involves adding one of the various color modules—such as Initial Color or Color Over Life—to the emitter. This alone, however, is not enough to actually apply color to your materials. Particles, like virtually every renderable actor in Unreal, require a material for their final look. The color produced by your color module must be transferred to the material that is placed on the particles themselves.
