Unity Remote

Now that you have a general understanding of the iPhone’s input interface, it’s time to begin using it. Before we begin analyzing and interacting with the iPhone’s unique input system, we need to get a handle on Unity Remote. This program is a necessary companion for the Unity iPhone development environment. What Unity Remote does is allow you to control your Unity game view as if it were an iPhone itself. Traditional iPhone development uses the iPhone Simulator, which is useful for testing basic compatibility but doesn’t support tilt-based interactions; actually, it’s completely useless for our purposes because it doesn’t work with Unity-based apps. For these reasons, Unity Technologies created Unity Remote to allow developers to debug their apps without even having to launch Xcode.

After installing Unity iPhone, you can navigate to the folder where it was installed, and you’ll find another folder titled Unity Remote. This folder contains an Xcode project, which you can build and deploy to your iPhone or iPod Touch. After successfully building and installing the program on your development device, you can boot it up and as long as your device is on the same Wi-Fi network as the development machine running Unity iPhone, you should see it pop up (see Figure 5.1). If you’re running more than one computer with Unity, you’ll be able to select which computer you want to connect to. The basic premise of Unity Remote is to connect over Wi-Fi in order to control your game when you press the Play button in Unity.
