Chapter 11. Direct Mailer and Content Se... > Content Selection Framework

Content Selection Framework

In an earlier chapter, while discussing Order Processing Pipelines (OPP), we saw how discounts can be created and applied to orders. To demonstrate the concepts, we created two discounts. One was called “Site-wide 25% Off Discount,” which gives 25 percent off on all products to all users. The other discount was called “Senior Citizen Discount,” and it awards a 50-percent discount specially to users over 60 on the purchase of a printer. So what if a 60-year old user checks out a printer? Will the site-wide 25 percent off discount apply or the special 50-percent discount? The special discount is applied because it was created with a priority of 30, whereas the site-wide discount has a lower priority, 60. Therefore, when more than one discount is applicable, the one with the higher priority is applied. In the case of Priority for Discounts, the lower the number, the higher is the priority for a discount.

Now the question is, when in the OPP is this discount selected and applied? The discounts are applied to the basket by the OrderDiscount component in the OPP. OrderDiscount components use the Discounts cache to retrieve a simple list of discounts that are selected and already scored. So then how were these discounts scored? They were scored by the ScoreDiscounts component in discounts.pcf, which is a Content Selection Pipeline.
